What is KVPY?

Course Overview

Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana or popularly known as KVPY was introduced by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India in 1999 to inspire students to pursue careers in research in the basic sciences, engineering, and medicine. The program’s goal is to find and inspire promising and young students to seek careers in science. Being a nationwide examination it is the dream of many students to crack it and secure their future in the research field.
The exam is funded by DST whilst it is conducted by the reputed Indian Institute of Science (IISC), Bangalore.

Eligibility Criteria for this Examination:

  • For Stream SA: Students studying in Class XI in Science subjects and having secured a minimum of 75% (65% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science in the Class X board examination.
  • For Stream SX: Students studying in Class XII science subjects and having secured a minimum of 75% (65% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science in the Class X board exam and a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science in the Class XII board examination.
  • For Stream SB: Those candidates studied in 1st year of UG course in Basic Science such as Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics and Biology leading to B.Sc. / BS / B. Stat. B. Math. / Int. M.Sc. MS can appear for this exam.
  • Candidates have to secure at least 60% marks in case of GEN category & 50% marks in case of SC/ST/PWD category in aggregate in Science subjects in Intermediate Board Examination.
  • Candidates have to obtain 60% marks (50% Marks for SC/ST/PWD category) in the 1st year final examination of B.Sc. / BS / B.Stat / B.Math / Int.M.Sc / MS before taking up the fellowship, if awarded.

Exam Structure:

  • For Stream SA:
    The paper is divided into two sections. Section A contains 60 questions each of 1 mark and any wrong attempt will result in a 0.25 mark deduction, whereas Section B contains 20 questions each one of which holds 2 marks, and on the wrong attempt will result in 0.50 mark deduction, hence, making the whole paper comprising 100 questions. The applicants will have to attempt questions from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics within 3 hours.
  • For Stream SX / SB:
    The paper here also is divided into two sections. Section A contains 80 questions each of 1 mark and any wrong attempt will result in a 0.25 mark deduction, whereas Section B contains 40 questions each one of which holds 2 marks, and on the wrong attempt will result in 0.50 mark deduction, hence, making the whole paper comprising 160 questions. The applicants will have to attempt questions from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics within 3 hours.
